Lesson 6: Defining Units of Value in Your Project

Objective

To identify the core "units of value" in your project that represent the fundamental transactions or value propositions for customers. Each unit should have:

  • A clear name.
  • A measurable unit of delivery (e.g., items, hours, kilometers).
  • A market-driven average price.

Steps to Identify Units

  1. Understand the Core Value

    • Think about what customers would pay for in your product or service.
    • Examples: A single trip in a taxi app, a completed course, a kilogram of delivered groceries.
  2. Break Down the Value Proposition

    • List all potential offerings, considering different customer segments or product features.
    • Example: For an educational platform:
      • Single lesson (e.g., 1,000 rubles/hour).
      • Full course (e.g., 10,000 rubles/course).
      • Exam preparation package (e.g., 5,000 rubles/package).
  3. Determine the Key Unit

    • Focus on the most significant or core offering that defines your business.
    • If multiple units exist, prioritize based on:
      • Customer demand.
      • Simplicity of measurement.
      • Clear market pricing.
  4. Estimate the Average Price

    • Research the market to determine the standard price for each unit.
    • If no clear pricing exists, use similar products or competitors for reference.

Examples of Units

Taxi Service

  • Unit: A single trip.
  • Measurement: Kilometers traveled.
  • Average Price: 10 rubles per km.

Online Education Platform

  • Unit 1: A single lesson.
    • Measurement: Hours of instruction.
    • Average Price: 1,000 rubles/hour.
  • Unit 2: Full course.
    • Measurement: Course completion.
    • Average Price: 10,000 rubles/course.

Real Estate App

  • Unit: A processed property listing.
  • Measurement: Listings.
  • Average Price: 500 rubles/listing.

Deliverables

  1. List All Possible Units

    • Write down every unit you could sell in your project (even exploratory ones).
    • For each unit, specify:
      • Name of the unit.
      • Measurement unit.
      • Average price or market value.
  2. Identify the Core Unit

    • Highlight the most significant unit of value in your project.
